Battle of the Books
(BOB)
What is it?
Battle of the Books is a competition between teams to see who can answer more questions correctly after reading the assigned titles. Questions are far more complicated than AR questions.
Who participates?
All 4th and 5th grade students will participate in BOB.
How are teams formed?
Your classroom teacher will assign the teams.
How many books are in the battle?
10-16 (it will very from year to year depending on the titles available)…they will range in level from third grade to eighth grade. They will come from various genre including fiction, non-fiction, poetic prose, fantasy, historical fiction, true stories, and science fiction.
When does this start and how long does it go?
I will introduce the titles to you the first week in December and we will have the final battle in March. The specific date will be determined in December and parents will be notified.
Your teams will be formed in early December. You will have time to form a strategy with your team to figure out how you are going to get all titles read. The titles will be the core focus of your library time with Mrs. Moore.
You may begin checking out the titles the first week in December after the introduction week.
Where do we get copies of the books to read?
What if I can’t read some of the books—too difficult
We will try to arrange adult volunteers to help with reading, small groups may work together with staff, we may have copies of titles on audio-tape available for check-out. You will be required to follow along with the print if the book is read to you or if you listen to it on audio. Parents may read aloud to you as you follow along with the text. One of the books will be a Read-Aloud read by your classroom teacher.
Other Requirements
• Each team will have to prove that all titles have been completed by that team. To do this an AR test must be taken, AND PASSED with 70% or higher, by someone on your team and submitted prior to the final battle in March.
• The titles may be read multiple times by any member on your team. Several are “quick” reads and it’s recommended that titles be read as many times as is allowed by time.
• There will be practice battles during your library sessions with Mrs. Moore over the course of the months. This will prepare you for the final battle.
• There will be semi-final battles within the grade levels to determine the top three winning 4th grade teams and the top three winning 5th grade teams.
The Final Battle will take place between the three highest winning 4th grade teams and the three highest winning 5th grade teams. There will only be one champion 4th grade team and one champion 5th grade team.

Where do we get copies of the books to read?
- McLane’s Library has 10 copies of each of the titles. That is not enough for everyone to have their own copy at the same time. If you check them out from there, you will only be allowed to check a BOB book out for one week, no renewals. Many students will want to read these titles. If the book is one of the longer ones, you will be allowed to have it for two weeks. I will create a Time Management sheet so you can organize your reading within the time limits of checking these out from school.
- You may have some of these titles at home in your own collection.
- The Timberland Library will most definitely have copies of these titles.
- Your classroom teacher may also have copies in their classrooms that you may borrow.
- You and your family may purchase them for your own in eBook form or print from a book store or download them from online.
